The earlier breast cancer is detected, the better: smaller, earlier-stage cancers have markedly better survival rates, and allow for less invasive treatments. According to the American Cancer Society, five-year survival rates are 99% for a localized disease and 86% for a regional disease, but just 27% for patients whose disease was metastatic upon detection.
